This is why many people opt for the cheaper, illegal option. To the DIY consumer much of the package is wholly unnecessary. But instead of passing some of the benefits onto consumers, they're forcing you to buy a package that only dealers or mechanics can make full use of. If a lot of the comms and diagnostic part is generic, the company benefits from economies of scale (they don't have to build a system from scratch every year). That makes even more of a case for lowering costs. ![]() I am sure that serious work would be needed to change this such that the software is only limited to being used on a particular type or range of cars? I won't pretend to know the numbers, I can only presume the software is designed as it is due to so many cars using the same vehicle management systems with minor differences. The licence verification is on the PC software end and is actually relatively secure. I have diagnostic software for my Alfa that I bought for 50 EUROS. And create an additive licence option where the marginal cost is a decreasing function of the number of vehicles you add (the more you add, the less you pay per additional vehicle).
